Finished size

14 x 7″ measured flat

Materials

  • 300 yards Red Heart “Super Saver” shown in color Turqua (see Materials note)
  • Suggested hook: 12mm (or size to meet gauge) (see Materials note)

Materials Notes

Project is double-stranded, meaning that you hold two strands together and work with them as one strand at the same time. One skein is sufficient for this project, but you will have to split the skein evenly, or you can use two skeins at the same time.

I used a 12mm hook for this project. 12mm may not be a readily-available hook size for you. It seems to be more common in European and Asian countries. However, since I crochet very loosely anyway, a lot of people will need to use a 15mm-P hook to meet my gauge. If you don’t have access to a 12mm hook, try the 15mm hook.

Gauge

6 sts x 6 rounds measures 4″ square

Skill Level

The actual pattern has a skill level of “Easy”. This project is made in predominantly one stitch with no increasing or decreasing. Skills achieved: Working in the round, working with double strands, using a foundation half double crochet (optional) and using a front post double crochet.

Pattern Note

This project is shown on the “wrong side.” Although it is reversible, I prefer the look of this side.

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to the side of the stitch, going around the back of the stitch, then back to the front of the work on the opposite side of the stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, [yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] 2 times.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Round 1: Using two strands of yarn as one throughout, ch 43, sk first ch, hdc in each rem ch, without twisting the piece, sl st to first hdc (skipped ch 1 does not count as a stitch)–42 hdc. The bottom of the last stitch and the first stitch will be joined during Finishing.

Optional Round 1: I used a foundation half double crochet since I preferred it for this project. If you prefer the look and stretch of foundation half double, work this stitch instead until you have a total of 42 foundation half double crochet worked then slip stitch to the first.

Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout), FPdc around same st as joining, FPdc around each rem st, sl st to first FPdc–42 FPdc.

Rounds 3-10: Rep round 2, fasten off.

Finishing
Using yarn needle and beginning strand of round 1, join base of first hdc to last hdc. Weave in all ends carefully and it’s ready to use!
