Stitch Pattern

Row 1: (Opening Stitches) With CA and cro-hook, make a length of ch as specified. Insert hook in the top loop only of the second ch from hook and pull up a loop (two loops remain on hook). * Insert hook in the top loop only of the next ch and pull up a loop. Repeat from * across. You will end with the same number of loops as the original chain. (Closing Stitches) Turn your hook so that the back of your work is facing you. Push the loops to the opposite hook. Attach CB with slip knot to this hook. Pull this loop through ONE loop on hook. * YO and pull through TWO loops (one of CB and one of CA). Repeat from * across, until there is one loop left on hook. Do not turn.

Row 2: (Opening Stitches) Skip the first vertical bar. With CB, YO, insert hook under TWO vertical bars of CA. YO and pull up a loop. * YO, insert hook under next TWO vertical bars of CA. YO and pull up a loop. Repeat from * across. (Closing Stitches) Turn your hook so that the back of your work is facing you. Push the loops to the opposite hook. With CA, YO and pull through ONE loop on hook. * Ch 1. YO and pull through THREE loops (one of CA and two of CB). Repeat from * across, until there is one loop left on hook. Do not turn.

Row 3: (Opening Stitches) Skip the first vertical bar. The vertical bars will now appear as inverted "Vs." Working with CA, insert your hook under the next vertical bar, which appears to be "leaning diagonally" and pull up a loop. * YO, skip the next vertical bar (the first side of the inverted "V"), insert the hook under the "leaning" vertical bar and pull up a loop. Repeat from * across to within the last loop. DO NOT yarn over before the last vertical bar. Insert your hook under the last vertical bar and pull up a loop. (Closing Stitches) Turn your hook so that the back of your work is facing you. Push the loops to the opposite hook. With CB, YO and pull through ONE loop on hook. * YO and pull through TWO loops (one of CB and one of CA). Repeat from * across until there is one loop left on hook. Do not turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 throughout.

Notes

To bind off stitches, insert hook under indicated vertical bar, YO and pull loop through vertical bar and NEXT loop on hook.

Managing loops: While working with the cro-hook, you may find that you have too many loops on your hook at one time for the project to be manageable. In this instance, pull up as many loops as are comfortable for you (you DO NOT have to complete the row). Turn your hook over and close all the loops except for the last four or five. Turn your hook back over and continue pulling up loops. Repeat this process as necessary to complete the row.

Adding New Skeins: Always join a new skein of yarn at the beginning or ending of a row.

Instructions

With cro-hook and CA, ch 153. Begin Stitch Pattern (see above). Work Stitch Pattern until piece measures approximately 44 inches, ending with CA. Bind off all stitches. Do not cut CA. Cut and securely fasten CB. Switch to smaller crochet hook.

Border

With CA, ch 1, sc evenly around entire afghan, with 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to first sc. Ch 3. Skipping the first stich, dc in each stitch around, with 5 dc in each corner. Sl st to third ch of beg ch. Fasten off.

Weave all ends securely.
