Technique: Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian Crochet Drop Stitch

Like hand-knitting, the Tunisian crochet drop stitch is created by making an extra yarn over when creating the stitch, then dropping it off on the next pass. When working the drop stitch, please follow the instructions literally. When it says to remove the loop from the hook, simply remove it from the hook. Lift up on it and take it off. The yarn over will easily slide off and you place the loop back on the hook.

Finished Size

approx. 14 x 51”

Materials

Universal Yarns’ Deluxe Worsted (100% wool, 100g, 220 yds per hank)

Color A: #71662 Turquoise, 2 hanks (370 yds)

Color B: #71661 Shadow Lime, 2 hanks (320 yds)

Suggested hook size: Size 6.5mm [US K-10 ½] Tunisian Afghan Hook (24” minimum length suggested)

Needle (for weaving ends)

Gauge

In stitch pattern, 11 sts and 15 rows = 4”. Gauge is approximate, due to the ups and downs of the rows.

Special Stitches

Video Support is available for these two stitches on my YouTube channel here. Both right- and left-handed versions are available.

Tunisian reverse stitch (trs): With hook behind work, insert hook from side to side under back vertical bar, always keeping hook to back of work, yo, pull up lp.

Tunisian knit stitch (tks): Insert hook between front and back vertical bars of the same stitch, coming out at back of work, yo, pull up lp.

Additional Abbreviations

ch=chain; lp(s)=loop(s); rem=remaining; rep=repeat; sl=slip; sk=skip; st=stitch; yo=yarn over

Notes

When instructed to “close normally”, close row as follows: ch 1, [yo, pull 2 lps] across.

To change colors, work closing until 2 lps remain on hook, drop the old color and close with the new color. Fasten off old color; carrying it up is not recommended.

To increase width, add multiples of 12 to the starting ch. The multiple is 12+8.

Instructions

Row 1: With Color A, ch 140, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up lp, [insert hook in next ch, yo, pull up lp] across to end—140 lps on hook. Close normally.
