Finished Size

6″ high, 22″ circumference (stretching to about 26″)

Materials

  • One hank Tahki Cotton Classic (108 yds per 50g mercerised cotton) (shown in color #3006) or other comparable DK weight yarn
  • Suggested hook: K (6.5mm)
  • Boye 2″ cabone ring
  • Yarn needle (for weaving ends and seaming)

Gauge

16 sts x 7 rows measures 4″ square

Gauge isn’t extremely important with this project. The important thing is to keep your stitches loose. This stitch pattern is typically quite dense, however, with a larger hook and working into only one loop of a stitch, it has the look of lace.

Skill Level

Working around the plastic ring may take some practice if you’ve never done it before, but, the pattern is super easy, using only single crochet and double crochet throughout.

Pattern Note

When working a project in all back or front loops like this project, I will usually work the last stitch of the row under both loops because that last stitch gets a little loopy. You can feel free to use this technique as well, if you like.

Your cowl can be made longer. There is sufficient yarn to accommodate different neck sizes as long as you’re close to the same gauge. Take note of the number of rows added to make each side the same length.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Foundation Round: Work 52 single crochet around plastic ring, sl st to first sc.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in same sc as joining and in next 25 sc, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked–26 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, working in front loops only here and throughout remaining rows, sc in first st, [dc in next st, sc in next st] to last st, dc in last st.

Rows 3-17: Rep row 2. Fasten off after final row.

Opposite Side

Row 1: With RS facing, join with sl st to begin working in unused single crochet from Foundation Round, ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in same sc as joining and in next 25 sc, turn–26 sc.

Rep Rows 2-17 as for other side. Fasten off, leaving a 14″ yarn strand for seaming.

Assembly

With yarn needle, seam row 17 to row 17. Weave in the ends carefully and it’s ready to use!

Optional

I attached a drop earring to the top center of the plastic ring after completion.
